The Deer’s Revenge
My paintings combine the two separate realities of South Netherlandish unicorn tapestries and dated midwestern interiors that are both easy to tell apart because they do not belong but are integrated so they exist convincingly in the same space. The blending of these worlds form new narratives that through careful collage become seamed together; two time periods warring against each other, one from a distant past and one that is still familiar to us. While my paintings encompass large interiors and narratives my embroideries hone in on smaller more intimate subjects. Since embroidery has a stigma of being a homemaker’s hobby, I wanted to work from source material that rejected this stereotype. There is a certain amount of confusion that occurs in the transfer from image to embroidery. The crop of the embroidery, the lack of color, the fragments of text, and partially formed people create an abstract space where the viewer can fit what they see into their own context.
Maddie Hinrichs is an MFA Candidate at the University at Albany. She received her BFA from the University of Lincoln- Nebraska in 2019. She works with oil painting and embroidery mediums. Her paintings depict midwestern interiors that have parts of the unicorn tapestries seamlessly collaged within them. The blending of these worlds form new narratives that elevate the deer which haunts the familiar, dated interiors. Her embroidered work encompasses subject matter such as graffiti, posters, and exteriors of buildings. The crop of the embroidery, the lack of color, the fragments of text, and partially formed people create an abstract space where the viewer can fit what they see into their own context.
